Both Sides of the Sword

January 25, 2022

First let me say that I really appreciate the many supportive emails and well wishes for my husband. The good news is that John is home and doing well. He is overloaded a bit with figuring out new doctor appointments and medications, but coping with all that.

I am pleased that I did get some indication from the doctor about the likely root cause. Still that was in itself a double edged sword. One of his medications had a negative downside. Now that I know that, I feel like I can have more mastery in the future

I think the good side of the sword was that our  Theorist talents and skills will help us be more strategic and alert to cues in the future. The downside is that we will have to watch out that we don’t let our core needs for mastery and our drive to be strategic override the need for tactical action.

In the follow up visit, one of the doctors said to call right away if these symptoms recur and John can come in for a blood test that would let us know if there is a problem faster than waiting until it is serious. That tactical possibility never occured to either of us.

One of my friends pointed out that under stress, we are not aware of what we need to know. In my case the stressors of covid and the emergency situation were increased by the Theorist Essential Motivators specific stressors. Thus, the doctor's advice to take tactical action to get information is really well taken.

In the meantime, I am still driven to analyze all the variables to get better mastery over any future situations. Sometimes, this takes the form of suggesting a question John should ask his primary care doctor and that has been helpful, but I do need to remember that we need some logistical and tactical actions to take as well as some diplomatic ones so I don’t blow up at a health professional. (John is much better than I am at being very polite and not pushy.)

I am grateful for all the support you have given me and I’m sure this exploration of Essential Motivators will provide more examples for our upcoming Essential Motivators certification course.
